Les Nichols, Expert Witness in Child Protection

Mr. Nichols serves as an expert witness (defense and plaintiff) in cases involving the injury of children under the care of organizations, such as, schools, religious organizations, camps, mentoring and out-of-school time programs.  He is the former National Vice President, Child & Club Safety for Boys & Girls Clubs of America (HQ, Atlanta, GA).  In that role (1994-2016), he led the organization’s efforts in promoting child and youth safety policies and practices, as well as safe and secure facilities for approximately 4,000,000 children at local Clubs across the U.S. and overseas.  Since 2016, he has been in private practice as a consultant, writer, public speaker and expert witness.

Mr. Nichols has consulted, written and lectured on the critical need for organizations to develop strategic protection plans to prevent sexual abuse, bullying, violence, abduction and physical injuries to children and teens under the care and custody of organizations. Most recently, he co-authored (with Michael Dorn and Phuong Nguyen) the textbook, Extreme Violence: Understanding & Protecting People from Active Assailants, Hate Crimes & Terrorist Attacks, slated to be published by Cognella Academic Publishing in late 2019.  He has been interviewed, quoted and cited in various print, broadcast and digital media.

Mr. Nichols is a board-certified protection professional (CPP) through ASIS International, is a member of the Security Industry Association (SIA) the International Association of Professional Security Consultants and has been a licensed architect since 1982.  He is a current member and past President of the National Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation.

Mr. Nichols is experienced in applying threat-vulnerability analyses (TVA), comprehensive safety and security audits, SWOT analyses and the Situational Prevention Approach (SPA) to identify organizational safety and security vulnerabilities.  He is experienced in applying Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) and specifying electronic protection systems that address surveillance, access management, visitor management, detection devices, alarms, and notification.
